Zahedan, Provincial capital in southeastern Iran
Located near the borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan, Zahedan stands at 1,352 meters elevation in an arid region of Sistan and Baluchestan province.
Originally named Dozdab, meaning 'place of robbers' due to bandits seeking water, the city received its current name during Reza Shah's 1929 visit.
The Makki Mosque, noted as Iran's largest Sunni mosque, incorporates Indian architectural elements and serves the local Baluchi and Persian communities.
The city functions as a transportation nexus with an international airport, railway connections to Pakistan, and highways linking to Tehran and Mashhad.
The population increased from 17,500 residents in 1956 to over 590,000 in 2001, partly due to Afghan refugee settlement during regional conflicts.
