Zahedan

Zahedan is a major city in southeastern Iran's Sistan and Baluchestan province, positioned in an arid landscape at 1,352 meters elevation near the borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan. It has developed as a significant transportation hub with distinct urban features.

The city was originally called Dozdab, a name reflecting the bandits who roamed the dry region seeking water from travelers. It received its current name in 1929 during a visit by Reza Shah.

The Makki Mosque shapes the city's identity through its blend of Iranian and Indian architectural features, serving as a spiritual and social hub for local Baluchi and Persian communities. You can witness how different groups share spaces and maintain their traditions here.

An international airport and rail connections to Pakistan make reaching the city straightforward, while highways connect to major centers like Tehran and Mashhad. Visiting during cooler months is more comfortable than summer, when heat becomes extreme in this arid zone.

The city transformed from a small settlement into a metropolis within decades, largely driven by the arrival of Afghan refugees during regional conflicts. This rapid growth fundamentally reshaped the population and community makeup.
