Mahabad, Administrative city in West Azerbaijan Province, Iran.
Mahabad stands at an elevation of 1,324 meters in a fertile valley south of Lake Urmia in northwestern Iran.
The city served as the capital of the short-lived Kurdish Republic of Mahabad from January to December 1946 under Soviet support.
The Kurdish population of Mahabad maintains strong traditions, with the city producing notable literary figures and the first Kurdish-Kurdish-Persian dictionary.
