Rudkhan Castle

Rudkhan Castle, Medieval fortress in Gurab Pas Rural District, Iran.

Rudkhan Castle is a stone and brick fortress that spreads about 1500 meters across mountain ridges, featuring roughly 65 towers. The site sits at elevations between 665 and 715 meters and divides into two main sections: a western area that once housed rulers and an eastern section with military functions.

The fortress was originally built during the Sassanid Empire as a defense against Arab invasions. It was later rebuilt and reinforced by the Nizari Ismailis around 1096.

The fortress displays architectural elements from different periods in its walls and towers, reflecting how various empires left their mark on its structure. Visitors can observe these influences in the distinct construction techniques used across different sections.

The site sits high in the mountains and requires sturdy footwear and reasonable fitness to explore thoroughly. Visitors should bring plenty of water and prepare for changing weather conditions at higher elevations.

The fortress includes natural springs and a sophisticated water storage system that ensured supplies during sieges. This water infrastructure reveals the thoughtful planning for extended defensive periods.
