Karkheh Dam, Embankment dam and hydroelectric power station in Khuzestan Province, Iran
The Karkheh Dam extends 3,030 meters across the Karkheh River, reaching a height of 127 meters and creating a substantial water reservoir.
Construction of this major infrastructure project began in 1992 after initial studies by Development and Resources Corporation in 1956 and completion of designs in 1990.
The dam construction project employed 5,000 workers from the surrounding regions, marking a significant period of industrial development in Khuzestan Province.
Three turbines generate 140 megawatts each, producing an annual average of 934 gigawatt-hours of electricity for the regional power grid.
The reservoir maintains a storage capacity of 5.9 billion cubic meters and provides irrigation for 320,000 hectares of agricultural land in the province.
