Karkheh Dam

Karkheh Dam is a large embankment dam spanning the Karkheh River in southwestern Iran, featuring a series of turbines for electricity generation. The structure holds back a substantial body of water that serves both power production and agricultural irrigation across the province.

Planning studies for this project began in the 1950s, with detailed designs finalized in the early 1990s when construction commenced. The work became a major industrial undertaking that shaped the development of Khuzestan Province.

The dam construction project employed 5,000 workers from the surrounding regions, marking a significant period of industrial development in Khuzestan Province.

The site is accessible from nearby urban areas and offers views of the dam structure and reservoir from several vantage points. Keep in mind that access to certain zones may be restricted for safety and security reasons.

The reservoir maintains a storage capacity of 5.9 billion cubic meters and provides irrigation for 320,000 hectares of agricultural land in the province.
