Chaldean Catholic Archeparchy of Urmia

The Chaldean Catholic Archeparchy of Urmia operates from the Cathedral of St. Mary the Mother of God in West Azerbaijan Province, northwestern Iran.

The Archeparchy establishment occurred on September 4, 1890, addressing the need for proper ecclesiastical authority in the region for the Chaldean Rite.

The Archeparchy maintains the East Syriac Rite traditions, utilizing Syriac dialect of Aramaic in its religious ceremonies and administrative functions.

This ecclesiastical province oversees both the Archeparchy of Urmia and its suffragan, the Eparchy of Salmas, under the administration of a single bishop.

Thomas Meram, serving since 1983, held the position of President of the Iranian Episcopal Conference from 2000 to 2003.
