Karun-4 Dam, Concrete arch dam in Ardal County, Iran
The Karun-4 Dam is a concrete arch structure spanning 440 meters across the Karun River, with a curved double-arch design pressed between steep canyon walls. The construction rises approximately 230 meters from its base to the top of its spillway section.
Planning for the dam began in 1995, with construction starting in 1997 and becoming operational in November 2010. The project was developed to address growing electricity needs in the region.
The dam introduction changed agricultural methods in Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari province, affecting traditional farming practices of local communities.
The site sits in the rugged terrain of the Karun River valley, so sturdy footwear is advisable when exploring the surrounding area. Local guides and information services are available to help visitors navigate the canyon environment and understand the engineering.
The Karun River that feeds this dam is Iran's highest-discharge river system, carrying more water volume than any other river in the country. This exceptional flow made the dam's specialized curved design essential to handle the constant pressure and force.
