Baba Qodrat Caravanserai, Caravanserai in Mashhad, Iran.
Baba Qodrat Caravanserai is a historical inn from the Qajar period in Mashhad, built from brick, plaster, and tile fitted together in traditional ways. The building underwent complete renovation and now operates as restaurant and marketplace spaces within its preserved historical structure.
The structure was built in the 19th century under the commission of Eshaq Khan Qaraei-Torbati and later served as a factory until the 1980s. A major overhaul in the 2010s then transformed it into its present role as a public dining and commercial space.
The building displays traditional Persian architectural features through its central courtyard layout, which travelers and merchants once used for shelter and trade. Visitors today can observe how this design shaped the daily routines of people passing through.
The site is easy to access and visitors can walk through the courtyards or sit down at one of the restaurants inside. It works best to visit during morning or afternoon hours when foot traffic is lighter and you can see the spaces more clearly.
The central courtyard spans several thousand square meters, creating an open space that reveals the expansive layout of the original caravanserai design. This scale shows why these buildings could once accommodate hundreds of travelers and their animals at the same time.
