Zibad Castle

Zibad Castle is a stone fortification built on elevated terrain near the village of Zibad, featuring walls with Sasanian architectural characteristics. The structure sits strategically on a hilltop with views across the surrounding land, showing typical defensive design of its period.

The castle served as the final refuge of Yazdegerd III, the last Sasanian emperor, before his defeat by Arab forces in 651. This moment marked a turning point in regional history and the end of an ancient empire's rule.

The fortress holds national heritage status and connects to Persian literary traditions, with mentions in the epic Shahnameh that kept its story alive through centuries.

The castle can be reached by rural road from Gonabad city, traveling south through the Kakhk district area. A visit requires some planning as the location is remote and local roads may be unpaved or rough in places.

Near the castle lies Sufeh Pir cave, which local traditions identify as the burial place of Piran Viseh, an important figure in Persian mythology. This connection between the monument and ancient legend adds depth to the site's cultural significance.
