Shahid Rajaee Dam, Concrete arch dam in Sari County, Iran.
The Shahid Rajaee Dam is a concrete arch structure built across the Tajan River in northern Iran. It holds water for both power generation and supplying local communities with resources for farming and industry.
Building on this structure began in the late 1980s and took about a decade to complete. A power plant was added years afterward to use the stored water for generating electricity.
The name commemorates Mohammad-Ali Rajai, who served as both Prime Minister and President of Iran before his death in 1981.
The site is best reached by car, with viewpoints available from various angles around it. Since this is an active power facility, some areas may have restricted access depending on operations.
The dam's width changes noticeably from its top edge down to its foundation, with thicker lower sections to resist the strongest water pressure. This deliberate shaping demonstrates how engineers tailored the structure to withstand the forces at work beneath the surface.
