Kangelo Castle, Ancient fortress in Savadkuh County, Iran.
Kangelo Castle is an ancient fortress in Savadkuh County featuring cylindrical structures and towers constructed with rubble masonry and lime mortar for defense. The stronghold sits in mountainous terrain on the slopes of Mount Khero-Naru near the Arim River valley.
The fortress was built during the Sassanid Empire period between 224 and 651 CE as a military stronghold controlling the Mazandaran region. It held strategic importance in this mountainous borderland during that era.
The fortress served as a sacred space where followers of the ancient Mithra religion gathered, a faith deeply rooted in this region of Persia. Visitors today can still sense how the layout of rooms reflects the spiritual needs of those who worshipped here.
The site is accessible through the village of Kangelo in Mazandaran Province and sits in a mountainous area with mixed terrain. Visitors should prepare for uneven ground and wear appropriate footwear for exploring the slopes.
The ruins stand on Mount Khero-Naru and received official recognition as an Iranian National Heritage site in July 2000, a designation that confirmed their archaeological significance. This status protects and preserves the remains for future study and visitation.
