Önundarfjörður

Önundarfjörður is a fjord in Iceland's Westfjords, lying between two larger fjords with sheer cliffs rising directly from the water. The steep mountains that frame it create a narrow waterway surrounded by dramatic rocky terrain on all sides.

The fjord became more accessible when a major tunnel was built in the 1980s, connecting the area to the main town nearby. This infrastructure project significantly reduced the isolation of the communities living along its shores.

The villages scattered along the fjord show how people have traditionally lived between the steep mountains and the water. Their small houses and fishing practices continue to reflect how communities adapted to this remote setting.

You can reach the fjord by driving through various roads, with the tunnel from the main town offering the most reliable access year-round. The summer months bring the best conditions for exploring and enjoying the landscape without road hazards.

A sandy beach on the fjord's eastern side features golden sand and rolling dunes that curve naturally down to the water. This rare sandy shoreline creates an unusual contrast against the cliffs that dominate the rest of the fjord.
