Reyðarfjörður, Coastal town in Fjarðabyggð, Iceland
Reyðarfjörður lies at the end of a 30-kilometer fjord, surrounded by mountains reaching heights of 972 meters above sea level.
The town developed from a trading post in the late 19th century and became the second-largest Allied military base in Iceland during World War II.
The World War II museum displays military equipment and documents the presence of British forces that transformed this small fishing community.
The Alcoa Fjarðaál aluminum smelter produces 346,000 metric tons annually and employs 450 people, forming the economic foundation of the town.
A wooden Catholic church, constructed in Slovakia and transported to Iceland, stands as Saint Thorlak Church since its consecration in 2017.
