Heidmork

Heidmork is a protected forest near Reykjavik that covers a large expanse with lakes, forests, streams, and ancient lava fields spread throughout. Many marked trails run through these different landscapes, allowing people to walk through varied terrain and natural features.

It was established as a municipal protected area in 1950 and transformed through a large-scale planting project with various tree species. This reforestation effort changed the landscape and created one of Iceland's few substantial forest areas.

The name comes from Hedmark in Norway, reflecting the Norse heritage embedded in how Icelandic places are named and remembered. This connection shapes how locals view the land as part of their cultural identity.

It sits only a short distance from downtown Reykjavik and is easy to reach for a day trip. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and dress for changeable Icelandic weather conditions.

The area holds millions of trees from many different species, which is remarkable for Iceland where vegetation is typically sparse and scattered. This dense planting creates a rare forest environment that stands out from the rest of the Icelandic landscape.
