Heidmork, Protected forest near Reykjavik, Iceland
The Heidmork conservation area encompasses 3,200 hectares of land with diverse landscapes including lakes, forests, waterways, and ancient lava fields.
Established in 1950 as a municipal conservation area, Heidmork began its transformation through reforestation with 500 spruce and 8,000 pine trees.
The name Heidmork originates from Hedmark in Norway, reflecting the Norse heritage and traditional naming patterns of Icelandic geographical features.
Located 6 miles from central Reykjavik, Heidmork contains the city's water reservoirs and offers numerous marked trails for hiking and outdoor activities.
Over four million trees from twenty-six different species populate this area, creating an uncommon forest environment in a country known for sparse vegetation.
