Laugardalshöll, Indoor sports arena in Reykjavík, Iceland
Laugardalshöll is a multi-purpose indoor hall in Reykjavík's Laugardalur Valley that can hold up to 2,300 people for basketball and handball matches. The building also houses smaller training spaces and side rooms for sporting events and exhibitions of all kinds.
Construction work started in 1959 and stretched over several years due to lack of funds before the hall opened in 1965. Three years later, it hosted the 1972 World Chess Championship between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.
The arena gained international recognition during the 1972 World Chess Championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.
The hall sits in the eastern part of Reykjavík in the Laugardalur area, where other sports facilities can also be found. A visit is most rewarding when handball games or other sporting events take place.
Led Zeppelin played here in 1970 and turned the hall into an important venue for international concerts in Iceland. Later, bands like Metallica and other global acts performed in this space.
