Papey, Small island near Djúpavogur, Iceland.
Papey is a small island near Djúpavogur covering approximately 2 square kilometers and home to a lighthouse, church, and automated weather station. It sits surrounded by numerous smaller rocky skerries and ocean formations that create a dramatic coastal setting.
The island remained continuously inhabited from the time of Iceland's settlement until 1966, when the last permanent residents departed the isolated location. This nine-century span transformed it from a monastic center to a small fishing community.
The name Papey comes from the Papar, Irish Christian monks who settled there before Norse arrivals around 875. Their presence shaped the island's spiritual character, which remains visible in how the place is used today.
Boat tours depart from the village of Djúpavogur and are mainly available during the summer months of June, July, and August. Visitors should expect variable weather and rough conditions, as the island is fully exposed to the open ocean.
The island houses one of Iceland's smallest churches, built in 1904 and measuring just under 16 square meters. Despite its tiny size, this structure served as the spiritual center of the community until the last residents departed.
