Arona, Administrative commune in Piedmont, Italy
Arona is a commune on the western shore of Lake Maggiore in the Province of Novara, spreading from the waterfront up to wooded hills. The settlement combines a historic core on higher ground with a newer lakefront zone and residential neighborhoods.
Bronze Age finds document early settlement, and Roman inscriptions show the place held importance in antiquity. During medieval times the town belonged to the Borromeo family, who established their ancestral seat here.
The old quarter keeps its Piedmontese architecture with narrow lanes and stone arches climbing from the lakefront promenade toward the hills. Locals gather at the weekly market, where regional produce and traditional foods fill the stalls and animate the square.
From the waterfront, stairs and paths lead up to the higher center, requiring uphill walking. Visitors find restaurants and shops along the promenade, while the upper neighborhoods remain quieter and less crowded.
A narrow rock formation divides the waterfront zone and creates two small bays with different character. The northern bay stays sunny all day, while the southern one gets afternoon shade.
