Description
Sassuolo is a commune in the Secchia valley in the Province of Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region. The town lies about 17 kilometers southwest of Modena along the Secchia river, surrounded by hills and vineyards that stretch toward the foothills of the Apennines.
History
A settlement on this site was first mentioned in the year 980 and came under the rule of the Canossa family in 1039. In 1373, the Este took control and expanded their residence over the following centuries.
Culture
The name comes from Saxolum, showing the Latin roots of the area. Walking through the streets today, you find a mix of old houses and modern industrial buildings, reflecting how much the ceramic industry shapes the town.

The town is easy to explore on foot, as many of the main sights sit close together in the old center. Buses connect regularly to nearby areas and surrounding cities, making a visit without a car quite manageable.
