Carpiano, Italian comune
Carpiano is a small commune in the Metropolitan City of Milan with about 4,000 residents, surrounded by intensively farmed land watered by rivers such as the Lambro, Vettabbia, and Lisone. The landscape consists mainly of fields and old farmhouses called cascine, many of which remain in use today.
Carpiano was first mentioned in a document from 836, but in the 14th century it was ruled by the Pusterla family of Milan until the Visconti family took control. From 1395 onward, Gian Galeazzo Visconti granted the lands to monks of the Certosa of Pavia, who introduced advanced farming techniques there.
The name comes from the Latin word for maple tree, which once grew throughout the area. Houses are often built in the traditional 'a corte' style, arranged around a central courtyard, reflecting the community's long connection to farming and rural life.
The town is easily reached from Milan, with the Linate airport about 16 kilometers away, or you can take the Ovest ring road and follow signs to the SS 412 highway. Buses run from the nearest train station in Melegnano directly to the town, making a visit straightforward.
The town was the setting for the television series 'The Mysteries of Cascina Vianello' in the late 1990s, starring famous Italian actors Sandra Mondaini and Raimondo Vianello. This show brought Carpiano into the spotlight and made it known to fans of Italian television.
