Lamon, Italian comune
Lamon is a small town perched on a high terrace about 600 meters above sea level in the Province of Belluno. The village sits between two streams, the Cismon to the east and the Senaiga to the south, surrounded by steep mountain landscapes that rise above 2000 meters. The inhabited area spans more than 54 square kilometers and is divided into three main parts: Lamon, San Donato, and Arina, with around twenty smaller hamlets scattered in the hills.
People have settled in this area since Neolithic times, as archaeological finds show, including a reconstructed skeleton of a cave bear now displayed in the town hall. During Roman times, the Via Claudia Augusta passed through the territory, linking the coast to the interior, with possibly a fort near Colle di San Pietro. In the Middle Ages, the agricultural importance of the place was documented, especially bean growing and sheep raising, which remain foundations of life here today.
The name Lamon comes from ancient settlements in this mountain valley. Today you can see residents take pride in their bean harvest and prepare traditional dishes like smoked sheep meat and local pendolon beans. These practices connect people to their long past as farmers and herders.
You can reach Lamon easily by car or bus via the Passo Rolle mountain road, which connects Feltre to Primiero, then turn onto a smaller road that climbs uphill. The best time to explore is during hiking season and warmer months, when mountain paths are easily accessible and weather is stable. Simple accommodations and small restaurants in the village serve traditional local dishes.
A rare archaeological find in Lamon is the chalice of Deacon Orso, one of the oldest chalices in Western Christianity, discovered alongside a Roman burial site with over 80 tombs filled with jewelry and coins. This exceptional discovery points to the deep religious and cultural significance of the place during early Christian times.
