Baranzate, Italian comune
Baranzate is a municipality in the Metropolitan City of Milan, situated just north of Milan's city boundary in the Lombardy region. Its territory is compact and made up of residential neighborhoods with a mix of older and newer buildings arranged along flat, orderly streets.
Baranzate became an independent municipality in 2004, when part of the neighboring town of Bollate was separated to form a new administrative unit. Older buildings and the layout of the streets suggest that the area had been settled long before this formal separation took place.
The parish church of Nostra Signora della Misericordia draws attention with its modern lines, standing apart from the older-style churches found in nearby towns. Daily life in Baranzate unfolds along local streets and small shops, where people from the neighborhood cross paths at all hours.
Baranzate is well connected to Milan by bus, making it easy to reach without a car and to move between the two places throughout the day. The flat terrain means that getting around on foot or by bike is straightforward across the whole area.
Baranzate is one of the youngest municipalities in Lombardy, having been founded only in 2004, placing it among a handful of Italian towns that came into being in the 21st century. Despite this short independent history, it has developed its own local character that feels separate from Bollate, the town it was once part of.
