Giulianova, Coastal commune in Province of Teramo, Italy
Giulianova is a commune on the Adriatic coast in the Province of Teramo, Abruzzo, situated between the Salinello and Tordino rivers. The settlement includes an elevated historic center inland and a beachfront district along the shore.
Romans founded the colony Castrum Novum in the 3rd century BCE, which grew into a trade center due to its position on the Via Cecilia. In 1471 the town was redesigned following Renaissance principles, visible today in the upper quarter.
The Cathedral of San Flaviano takes its name from a local bishop and saint and stands in the upper town as a religious focal point. Visitors can see marble sculptures inside and admire the dome that was once covered with blue majolica tiles.
The upper town sits on a hill and offers views toward the coast, while the lower district lies directly by the sea with a sandy beach. The port serves both commercial and leisure boats and is one of four harbors in Abruzzo.
The 15th-century urban plan followed geometric grids and symmetries typical of ideal cities from that time. This layout remains visible in the street patterns of the upper quarter and stands in contrast to the medieval development in surrounding areas.
