Silvi, Coastal municipality in Province of Teramo, Italy
Silvi is a coastal commune in the Province of Teramo that stretches along the Adriatic coast and divides into two main areas: the seaside section of Silvi Marina and the hilltop settlement of Silvi Paese. These two parts create contrasting environments within a single municipality.
This settlement originated in Roman times as Castrum Silvae, functioning as an outpost to monitor maritime activities along the Adriatic shore. Over centuries, the community adapted and developed as coastal conditions and strategic needs evolved.
The annual celebration of Lu Ciancialon takes place on the last Sunday of May, bringing together residents of the historic center for a large communal bonfire. This event roots the community in shared traditions passed down through generations.
The location divides into two distinct areas, each with its own character: the marina section offers beach access and waterfront facilities, while the hilltop village with its narrow streets provides a different experience. Both parts are connected and can be explored on foot or with short trips.
The Torre di Cerrano, a former watchtower built to spot Turkish raids, still stands as a reminder of past maritime dangers along this coast. Today the tower has found new purpose as a center where marine researchers conduct their studies.
