Collegiate church of Archangel Michael, Gothic collegiate church in Città Sant'Angelo, Italy.
The Collegiate Church of Archangel Michael is a Gothic church in the hilltop town of Città Sant'Angelo, in the Abruzzo region of central Italy. It has a single main hall flanked by six side chapels, with stone frames and masonry arches running along the interior walls.
The building went through its first major reconstruction in 1266, giving it much of the form it still has today. A second round of work in 1546 added three supporting arches, reinforcing the structure considerably.
The church is named after Archangel Michael, a figure seen in Christian tradition as a protector and warrior. Inside, visitors can see artworks from different periods that show how the local community expressed its faith over the centuries.
The church is in the heart of the old town and can be reached on foot from most parts of Città Sant'Angelo. It is an active place of worship, so visitors should dress modestly and be aware that services may be held during their visit.
During renovation work, a hidden image of the Madonna was found inside one of the walls, which sparked strong local devotion. That discovery is what led to the rebuilding of the whole structure on a much larger scale.
