Teatro Comunale, Theatre in Piazza Duomo, Atri, Italy

The Teatro Comunale is a theatre with a neoclassical facade divided by Doric and Ionic orders and topped with a triangular pediment. Inside, the building contains three rows of boxes totaling 38 spaces and a gallery that together seat roughly 200 spectators.

The theatre opened on April 25, 1881, drawing around 700 visitors to its inaugural performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Un Ballo in Maschera. This opening marked a significant cultural moment for the city.

The ceiling displays a painting by Giustino Di Giacomo showing the muse Euterpe rising among cherubs in rosy light against a blue sky. This artistic element shapes the interior space and creates a distinctive feeling during performances.

The theatre sits on Piazza Duomo, where you can easily view its facade from the plaza in front of it. When planning a visit, check what performances are scheduled, as shows take place at different times throughout the year.

During World War II, the building served as a dormitory for English troops rather than hosting performances. After the war, it returned to functioning as a theatre.
