Atri, Medieval commune in Province of Teramo, Italy.
Atri is a commune in the Province of Teramo located at approximately 442 meters elevation on hilltops, offering views toward both the Adriatic Sea and Gran Sasso mountains. The settlement spreads across several elevated areas, with the medieval street layout still shaping the town's character today.
Atri developed from an Illyrian settlement called Hadranus, which became the Roman center Hatria. During the medieval period, it became an important settlement with a cathedral that later housed Renaissance artworks.
The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta displays 15th-century frescoes by Andrea de Litio that cover the interior walls. These artworks show how this place was a center for religious art during the Renaissance.
The town center connects well to larger cities in the region through regular bus services, while the nearest train station is about 15 kilometers away in Pescara. Arriving by bus is the easiest option for visitors without a car.
The natural areas surrounding this place display striking erosion formations with deep valleys in clay-rich soils. These badlands features were created by water erosion and offer an unexpected landscape experience near the town.
