Tortoreto, Coastal commune in Province of Teramo, Italy
Tortoreto is a coastal commune in the Province of Teramo that divides naturally into two areas: a hilltop old town and a modern beachfront district facing the Adriatic. These two sections each have their own character and together form the complete settlement.
The name comes from a medieval legend about turtle doves that Pope Gregory I reportedly observed in the area. This story became part of the town's identity over the centuries.
The townspeople celebrate San Nicola di Bari on December 6 with traditional ceremonies, local food preparations, and community gatherings throughout the area.
The best time to visit is from June through September when the weather is warm and stable and the beach is most active. Comfortable walking shoes help since you may move between the hillside old town and the flat beachfront area.
Since 1992, the European Blue Flag certification recognizes the excellence of Tortoreto's beach maintenance and water quality standards.
