Abano Terme, Thermal spa destination in Province of Padua, Italy.
Abano Terre is a small town in the Province of Padua known for its hot springs and numerous thermal facilities. The built-up area spreads across a gentle plain at the foot of the Euganean Hills, crossed by wide avenues and maintained green spaces between spa hotels.
The Romans used the natural thermal springs in ancient times and founded a settlement here with baths and villas. During the Middle Ages the site lost importance but experienced a revival in the 19th century through growing interest in spa treatments.
Most visitors come for thermal treatments and spend their time between therapies and walks through the gardens surrounding spa facilities. On weekends the public parks fill with locals who meet around historic fountains and shaded avenues.
The thermal baths and hotels cluster in the center, which you can easily explore on foot. Outside the high season in summer and early in the year you find more quiet and shorter waiting times for treatments.
The hot water from the springs is first collected in open basins where it cools slowly before being used for treatments. The characteristic sulfur smell in some streets comes directly from the rising steam of underground water flows.
