Tricarico, Medieval commune in Basilicata, Italy

Tricarico is a historic village in Basilicata located in the hills of Matera province at about 700 m elevation. The old town is divided into four distinct areas—Rabata, Saracena, Monte, and Piano—connected by narrow stone-paved streets.

Archaeological evidence points to settlement from the 5th century BC, while written records document a fortified settlement from the Lombard period around 849 AD. This early presence shows the area held importance for successive cultures over centuries.

Arab influence shaped the layout of the old town, particularly in the Rabata and Saracena quarters where winding medieval streets still follow their original paths.

The village is easy to explore on foot since the main areas are compact and walkable. Steep sections require good shoes and a comfortable pace to navigate the terrain properly.

During the Mashk-r carnival, participants wear traditional cow masks in processions that recall ancient pastoral traditions. This celebration reveals how settlement and countryside have long been bound together.
