Milan–Malpensa "Silvio Berlusconi" Airport, International airport in Somma Lombardo, Italy
Malpensa sits roughly 49 kilometers (30 miles) northwest of Milan within the Ticino River Valley Natural Park and covers a wide area near the municipalities of Somma Lombardo and Ferno. The facility has two separate terminal zones with several runways for international connections.
The site served from 1909 as a testing ground for aircraft prototypes by Giovanni Agusta and Gianni Caproni before starting commercial operations in 1948. The transformation into a civil traffic hub took place in the years following World War II.
The two terminals show the typical operation of a large air hub with separate areas for different carriers and travelers from many countries. Passengers move between halls with multilingual signs and international shops.
The Malpensa Express links the airport directly to central Milan while bus routes reach other cities across northern Italy. Travelers should allow enough time for moving between terminals if needed.
The site processes more than 721,000 tons of cargo each year and stands as the largest freight handling point in Italy. Connections reach more than 200 destinations worldwide.
