Soriano nel Cimino

Soriano nel Cimino is a medieval settlement in the Province of Viterbo, positioned at about 500 meters elevation on a hilltop. The town is defined by narrow winding streets, stone buildings, and the prominent Orsini Castle perched above, which dominates the skyline.

The settlement originated as a Roman outpost called Surianum and rose to prominence in the 13th century when Pope Nicholas III chose the Orsini Castle as his summer residence. This papal connection fundamentally shaped the town's development and character for centuries.

The Cathedral of San Nicola di Bari stands at the heart of the town and remains the main gathering place for religious celebrations. Throughout the year, local ceremonies and traditions continue to bring the community together here.

The narrow streets are best explored on foot and require good footwear, especially when wet or during winter. Arriving early in the day helps manage the uphill walks and allows better views of the castle and surroundings.

Ancient beech forests in the surrounding Cimini Mountains contain rare plant species and are accessible through marked hiking routes that most visitors overlook. This natural aspect contrasts sharply with the medieval buildings and offers a different experience of the area.
