Stadio San Nicola, Football stadium in Bari, Italy.
Stadio San Nicola is a football venue in southern Bari serving as home ground for S.S.C. Bari. The concrete structure consists of 26 individual segments in its upper tiers, separated by narrow gaps that give the building its characteristic appearance.
The arena was completed in 1990 for the football World Cup and hosted five tournament matches, including the third-place game. Renzo Piano designed the structure, which changed the urban landscape in the southern part of Bari.
Saint Nicholas of Myra, whose relics rest in a basilica downtown, gave the arena its official name. Fans use the facility today not only for football matches but also as a meeting point during larger events that shape city life.
The site lies roughly 8 kilometers (5 miles) south of downtown and holds more than 58,000 spectators. Wide access stairways with movable elements lead to different tiers and ease entry on match days.
The playing field sits roughly 2 meters (7 feet) below normal ground level, so visitors look slightly downward when entering. This arrangement reduces the visible height of the building from outside and integrates it better into the surrounding landscape.
