San Casciano in Val di Pesa is a Tuscan commune located southwest of Florence and surrounded by fourteenth-century walls with towers and gates. The position offers views across the Chianti wine region and the rolling hills beyond.

The settlement developed from a Roman post-stage called Decimo into a fortified town during the late 14th century. This transformation reflected Florence's medieval expansion into the surrounding territories.
