Founded by Romans in 59 BC, this settlement evolved into a significant commune that later became part of the Metropolitan City of Florence organization.
The central Piazza Giotto features a 3.2-meter statue commemorating the renowned painter Giotto, who was born in the local district of Vespignano.
The municipality contains 30 frazioni including Barbiana, Cistio, and Rupecanina, connected by public transportation networks to neighboring towns and Florence.
Both the Renaissance painter Fra Angelico and French opera pioneer Jean-Baptiste Lully were born within the territorial boundaries of this Tuscan commune.
