Bergeggi, Italian comune

Bergeggi is a small commune on the Ligurian coast in the Province of Savona, northwestern Italy, set between rocky cliffs and the sea. The village has narrow cobbled lanes, stone houses built close together, and a small harbor opening onto a rocky bay.

The area around Bergeggi was already frequented in Roman times, when the Ligurian coast served as a passage for trade and movement along the sea. In the medieval period, the settlement passed through the hands of Genoese rulers and other regional powers before eventually becoming part of unified Italy in the 19th century.

The name Bergeggi is thought to come from a Latin word related to mountains, which reflects the rocky landscape surrounding the village. At the small harbor, fishing boats still tie up alongside pleasure craft, showing how the place has shifted over the decades while keeping its seafaring roots.

Bergeggi sits along a narrow coastal road where parking is limited, so arriving early in the day or outside the summer season makes the visit easier. The lanes through the village are steep and uneven in places, so sturdy footwear is helpful.

Just offshore from the village lies a small uninhabited island, Isola di Bergeggi, which is now a protected nature reserve and cannot be visited without special authorization. The surrounding marine area is also protected, and the waters around the island are known for their clarity, making them popular with divers.
