Area marina protetta Isola di Bergeggi

This marine reserve covers approximately 901 hectares of Mediterranean waters and features limestone cliffs with several underwater caves scattered throughout. The seafloor is characterized by dense seagrass meadows that spread across wide areas and shelter numerous fish species.

The Italian Ministry of Environment established this marine protected area in 2007 to safeguard the marine biodiversity of the Ligurian coast. This official recognition marked the beginning of organized protection for a previously threatened coastal zone.

The reserve offers guided tours and information stations where visitors learn about Mediterranean coastal habitats and their importance for marine life. People visiting the area gain an understanding of how seagrass meadows and rocky cliffs support the survival of fish and other sea creatures.

The area divides into three zones, with the public section open for swimming and snorkeling while other sections allow only limited activities. Visitors should check the rules in advance to make sure their planned activities are permitted.

Beneath the water surface lies a special geological formation called La Grottina, a submerged tunnel that leads into an air-filled cave. This natural formation attracts divers seeking the rare experience of breathing dry air while underwater.
