Castelpetroso

Castelpetroso is a mountain commune in the Province of Isernia in the Molise region, situated at 872 meters above sea level. The settlement displays stone buildings and three ancient entrance gates that form distinctive features of its layout.

The settlement originated before the Lombard period, which established a fortified center with defensive walls during their territorial control. These early fortifications shaped the site's strategic importance through subsequent centuries.

The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Sorrows, built between 1890 and 1905, displays neo-gothic architecture and houses artworks by Amedeo Trivisonno. This religious structure shapes the village's appearance and remains a significant destination for pilgrims from the surrounding area.

The municipality connects to Isernia through regular bus services operating multiple times daily via the regional transport network. Since the commune sits on a hillside, comfortable walking shoes are recommended for exploring the streets.

Near Castelpetroso lies a regional nature reserve containing beech forests and streams that host numerous protected bird and mammal species. This natural area offers visitors a chance to observe the local wildlife and natural habitats up close.
