In 1770, thirty-eight fishing families from Pegli arrived after leaving Tabarka, a Tunisian island, and established their settlement here. This move by coral fishermen created the foundation for the town that exists today.
The people here speak Tabarkino, a dialect rooted in Genoese language that has survived through generations. You can hear this distinctive way of speaking in daily life throughout the town.
