San Leo, Medieval fortress and cathedral in Emilia-Romagna, Italy.

San Leo is a medieval settlement perched on a rocky plateau, crowned by a large fortress that towers above the surrounding landscape. The stronghold rises over residential areas and a cathedral featuring Romanesque elements.

The fortress was rebuilt in the 15th century under Federico da Montefeltro and expanded into a major military stronghold. This transformation made it a key defensive position in the region.

The cathedral displays Romanesque details and houses religious works from the early Christian period displayed inside. It remains a spiritual center where locals and visitors come together throughout the year.

Access is via local roads connecting to nearby towns, with the nearest major transport hub at Rimini in the vicinity. Visitors should expect winding roads and the hilly terrain of the region.

The fortress served as the final prison of Count Cagliostro, a mysterious 18th-century occultist, who died within its walls. His story remains intertwined with the fortress's darker chapters.
