Savoy Castle, Gothic Revival castle in Gressoney-Saint-Jean, Italy.

Savoy Castle is a Gothic Revival castle in Gressoney-Saint-Jean built from gray freestone sourced from nearby quarries. It has a rectangular central structure surrounded by five pointed turrets at various corners and sides.

Queen Margherita of Savoy commissioned this castle in 1899 as a summer retreat after being a guest at nearby baronial estates. Its construction reflected the late 19th-century fashion among Italian nobility for mountain residences.

The rooms display furnishings and tapestries created by a Turin craftsman who drew inspiration from medieval design. This interior style shows how people of that era imagined castles should look and feel.

The castle is open to visitors most days but with different hours depending on the season. Plan extra time to explore the rooms and wear comfortable shoes as there are stairs throughout the building.

An underground narrow-gauge railway once connected the dining room directly to the kitchen building. This system demonstrates how early 20th-century engineers found creative ways to add modern convenience to a mountain castle.
