Giarre

Giarre is a Sicilian municipality that extends from Mount Etna's slopes down to the Ionian Sea coast. The town stretches across different elevations between Catania and Taormina, connecting volcanic highlands with seaside areas.

The settlement developed in the late 16th century as part of Mascali county and remained so until 1815. The area later merged with Riposto under a new administrative name before reaching its current form.

The Museum of Uses and Customs of the Etna People displays everyday objects and handcrafted items that reveal how residents lived in the mountain communities. Visitors can see how local traditions shaped daily routines and family life in this volcanic region.

A main street connects the town center directly to the coast, with shops and restaurants along the way and access to transportation services. Visitors should be prepared for elevation changes when moving between the inland areas and the seafront.

The townscape is marked by several unfinished public buildings from the 1990s that stand as remnants of abandoned development projects. These incomplete structures create an unusual architectural contrast throughout the urban area.
