Castello della Manta, Medieval castle and military museum in Manta, Italy
Castello della Manta is a medieval fortress near Saluzzo that was later transformed into a noble residence and preserves impressive frescoes from different periods. Inside, there are several rooms with wall-covering paintings from the Late Gothic and Mannerist eras that spread across the walls.
The fortress was founded in 1150 as a defensive structure and took its present shape in the 15th century when the Saluzzo della Manta family transformed it into a noble residence. This transformation involved adding artistic decorations such as frescoes that displayed the family's status and wealth.
The interior walls display scenes from medieval literature and artistic traditions that reflected the life of nobility in that time. The frescoes tell stories of heroes and heroines who served as models for society back then.
The castle can be reached on foot from Manta and sits on a hillside with good views of the surrounding area. It is possible to see the rooms with their frescoes at a leisurely pace without having to walk long distances.
A particularly interesting detail is the Sala delle Grottesche, whose ceiling is painted with fine Mannerist patterns showing ancient ruins and architectural motifs. This room stands out immediately when you enter it because the entire ceiling looks like a painting.
