Riposto, Italian comune
Riposto is a coastal commune in the Metropolitan City of Catania, situated on the Ionian coast of Sicily. It stretches from a working harbor inland toward residential neighborhoods, with an older town center of narrow streets and more open blocks further out.
Riposto grew from a small trading harbor on the Ionian coast, used for centuries to move goods across the Mediterranean. Over time it became a proper town, gaining its own municipal status separate from neighboring settlements.
The name Riposto comes from the Latin word for storehouse, pointing to the town's past as a place where goods were kept before being shipped. Near the harbor, old storage buildings are still visible and give the waterfront a distinct character.
The harbor and the older streets in the town center are easy to explore on foot. Summer afternoons can get very hot along this stretch of coast, so mornings or early evenings are a better time to walk around.
Riposto and its neighboring town of Giarre are so closely linked that the area is often referred to together as Giarre-Riposto. The two towns even share a single train station, despite being officially separate communes.
