Filicudi, Mediterranean island in Aeolian archipelago, Italy.

Filicudi is a volcanic island in the Aeolian archipelago off Sicily with a compact size of about 9.5 square kilometers. Monte Fossa Felci rises approximately 774 meters and dominates the landscape above the Tyrrhenian Sea.

People inhabited the island during the Bronze Age around 2000 BCE, as shown by archaeological finds at Capo Graziano. Early inhabitants built their huts inland to escape attacks and raids from the sea.

The three villages of Porto, Valdichiesa, and Pecorini Mare shape daily life through traditional fishing practices passed down through generations. Visitors can see fishermen mending nets and farmers tending their fields using methods rooted in local heritage.

Ferries connect the island to Sicily and other Aeolian destinations, with most accommodations clustered in Porto village. It helps to explore the layout first, as the three settlements spread across different parts of the island.

A large nature reserve covers a significant portion of the island and protects rare native plant species. The location also serves as a refuge for Mediterranean bird species that can be spotted from land.
