Aqueduct of Vanvitelli, Neoclassical aqueduct in Caserta and Benevento, Italy

The Aqueduct of Vanvitelli extends for 38 kilometers through the Italian landscape, featuring a three-tiered structure that reaches a height of 55.8 meters.

Luigi Vanvitelli designed this water infrastructure in 1753 under Charles of Bourbon's commission, with construction completed in 1762 at a cost of 622,424 ducats.

The aqueduct forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site alongside the Royal Palace of Caserta and the San Leucio Complex, representing 18th-century engineering.

Visitors can access the aqueduct through the Valle di Maddaloni, where its most visible section spans 529 meters across the valley with multiple arches.

The water system draws from springs at Mount Taburno near Bucciano, marked by 67 control towers along its underground path to the Royal Palace gardens.

Ancient aqueducts and water systems of the world

The ancient structures transported water across valleys and plains using gravity. Built by Roman and Ottoman engineers, these aqueducts stand up to 50 meters tall, crossing valleys on multiple levels of stone arches. The structures supplied cities with fresh water from distant springs and rivers.
