Teatrino di corte, Royal theater in Royal Palace of Caserta, Italy
The Teatrino di Corte is a theater in the Royal Palace of Caserta featuring a horseshoe-shaped layout with five tiers of boxes. Alabaster columns and red marble pillars topped with gilded capitals define its interior.
King Charles of Bourbon commissioned the theater in the Royal Palace. Architect Luigi Vanvitelli completed it in 1769 after ten years of construction.
The ceiling displays frescoes by Crescenzo Gamba showing Apollo's victory over the python. Statues of Orpheus and Amphion frame the stage, creating an ornate setting for performances.
The hall accommodates about 500 spectators and features a movable backdrop. This opens directly onto the palace gardens, allowing natural scenery to be part of performances.
This was the only section of the palace that architect Luigi Vanvitelli saw fully completed during his lifetime. Its formal nature still reflects its original purpose as a space for exclusive royal performances.
