Basilica of San Saturnino

The Basilica of San Saturnino is an early Christian building from the 5th century with a central dome-covered area. The eastern section features a nave ending in a semicircular apse and displays the typical layout of this period.

The building was erected at the burial site of Saint Saturninus, a holy figure executed in 304 for refusing to abandon his faith. The structure later became a major religious and burial place for the early Christian community in Cagliari.

The building shows Byzantine architectural features in its stone structures and vault forms that you notice immediately upon entering. These design elements shape how the interior feels and give the space a distinctive character.

The building has limited opening hours, so you should plan your visit in advance. Access is available for people with mobility limitations in the accessible areas, so you can explore the space freely.

Archaeological excavations in the early 1600s revealed numerous ancient burials at this location. The remains of the saint were discovered during these investigations, confirming the religious significance of this place.
