St Mark's Campanile, Bell tower in St Mark's Square, Italy

The square brick tower measures 98.6 meters in height and features a golden weather vane depicting the archangel Gabriel at its summit point.

The original structure from 1000 AD collapsed in 1902, leading to an exact reconstruction that was completed in 1912 under architect Luca Beltrami's direction.

The five bells of the campanile have regulated daily life in Venice for centuries, marking work hours, government meetings, and religious ceremonies.

Visitors can access the belfry via an elevator installed in 1962, offering views across Venice, the lagoon, and the distant Alps on clear days.

The tower's foundation rests on alder wood piles driven into clay layers beneath Venice, supporting the massive brick structure above the water table.
