Lakes of Avigliana, Nature reserve with two lakes in Piedmont, Italy
The Lakes of Avigliana is a nature reserve with two crater lakes situated between Monte Pirchiriano and the Rivoli hill, covering approximately 409 hectares of protected land. The area also includes the Mareschi wetland and offers several walking routes for visitors.
The two lakes formed during glacial periods when water accumulated between moraines following the retreat of the Susa Valley glacier. This geological origin established the site as an important ecosystem that has persisted through the centuries.
Local legend speaks of a submerged village whose people were transformed into water as divine punishment, a tale that shapes how visitors perceive and remember this place. The story remains woven into conversations about the lakes today.
The reserve sits about 20 kilometers from Turin, making it fairly easy to visit from the city. Designated swimming areas are located near the sailing club, and the walking paths are suitable for casual strolls and birdwatching.
The Mareschi wetland here is Italy's westernmost swamp formation and hosts a wide variety of bird species including herons, coots, and bitterns. This small wetland ecosystem is easily overlooked by visitors but holds ecological value.
