Lunigiana, Historical region between Tuscany and Liguria, Italy

Lunigiana is a historical region in the Magra River valley, between the Apennines and the Ligurian coast. The territory includes dozens of stone villages, hilltop fortresses, and narrow valleys connecting Tuscany to Liguria.

Roman settlers founded the port city of Luni in the 2nd century BC, which gave the territory its name. During medieval times, local noble families controlled trade routes between Italy and the north, leading to the construction of numerous fortifications.

The name refers to the ancient port city of Luni, whose ruins remain visible in the southern part today. The region preserves pre-Christian stone figures depicting warriors and women, displayed in local collections.

The region is best explored by car, as villages are scattered across mountain roads. Spring and autumn offer pleasant temperatures for walking along old pilgrimage paths and visiting fortifications.

The coat of arms shows a crescent moon in a bear claw, a symbol that dates back to the ancient city. The local cuisine relies on chestnut flour, which once served as the main staple for mountain dwellers.
