Monte Cornizzolo, Mountain summit in Lombardy, Italy
Monte Cornizzolo is a mountain summit at roughly 1,240 feet (1,241 meters) above sea level, sitting on the border between the provinces of Como and Lecco in Lombardy. Its slopes shift from dense forest at lower elevations to open rocky ground near the top.
Archaeological digs on the slopes have uncovered a Mesolithic site, showing that hunter-gatherers used this area thousands of years ago. The mountain was therefore a place of human activity long before any medieval or modern settlement in the surrounding valleys.
On a clear day, visitors at the top can see both Lake Como and Lake Lecco stretching out below in different directions. Near the summit stands a small chapel, one of the few built structures you encounter along the way.
Several hiking trails lead to the top, ranging from moderate forest paths to steeper routes like the Direttissima from Suello, which involves stone staircases and exposed rock. Sturdy footwear and an early start are advisable, as the terrain changes quickly and some sections require care.
The summit is an internationally recognized paragliding launch site that draws pilots from across Europe, not just local enthusiasts. The combination of reliable wind patterns and the view over the lakes below makes it one of the more sought-after flying spots in the region.
